Conducted an evaluation of unusually high hexane consumption in the oil seed extraction process at the plant. Observed process, reviewed PFDs, interviewed plant operators, collected plant logs and process measurements. Examined the logs for trends that could indicate whether process variables such as miscella/solvent flow rate, steam flow/temperature, scrubber flow or operator error might account for the increased hexane losses. Identified the routes through which hexane losses could occur: through vents and equipment leaks; or as residual in wastewater, meal, and product oil. After statistical data analysis and charting key variables identified deviations in four process variables that could explain the increased hexane consumption. Based on findings recommended measures for process improvements. |
